Banishing Ageism with Empathy

Happy #GrandparentsDay! (September 8) Why not celebrate Grandparents' Day with some #intergenerational empathy, courtesy of Sages and Seekers?

Elly Katz started Sages and Seekers to diminish #ageism by developing empathy & respect between #olderadults and #teens. These two groups may seem worlds apart, but as Katz explains, they’re fighting for many of the same things.

“Both generations are searching for meaning & relevance, fighting feelings of loneliness… they also deal with issues around independence & self-determination.”

What have they discovered? A new kind of relationship! Until now undefined, unimagined – one that goes beyond traditional roles like “mentor,” or “parent.” Here older adults and teens meet as equals & take a deep dive into the human condition through the authentic exchange of experience. This cultivates empathy, which becomes the foundation for lasting connection.

“It is that connection that creates a sense of belonging. And when you belong, you care. You want to create a better life for yourself and your community.”

Many thanks to the American Society on Aging and presenters Sky BergmanElly Katz, and Ava Brennan, for "Intergenerational Programs: A World Health Organization Solution to Ageism,”  9/5/24

Programs like Sages and Seekers don’t just diminish ageism—By fostering mutual understanding and shared purpose, these relationships provide a lifeline for older adults experiencing #isolation and #loneliness.

COMING SOON: AGEISM AWARENESS DAY OCTOBER 9

Ageism Awareness Day is an opportunity to draw attention to the impact of ageism in our society and how we can reframe aging in our communities.
