REVIEW: “Eleanor the Great”🎬

🎬
Shortly after the death of her lifelong friend, 94 year old Eleanor Morganstein forms a friendship with Nina, a young journalism student who has recently lost her mother.
I appreciated the open conversations between Eleanor and Nina, and the touching flashbacks between Eleanor and her departed friend.

I did notice some #ageism creeping into the movie but it wasn’t directed at older adults, it was how Eleanor treated the young grocery stock person.
When he claimed “all pickles are the same” Eleanor gives him a dressing down that called into question both his basic math skills and sense of direction.

TBH this was a multiple-hankie tearjerker for me. Part of the message of the film was that grief isn’t something to be shied away from, or to be hidden. So there was a lot of recognition of loss.

But then, just as I had used up my last Kleenex and was reaching for my popcorn napkin, they made the biggest joke of the film. 🤣
Eleanor has made the news and the newscaster describes her as “Your average 94 year old!”
I mean, is there such a thing? Nope.
(As in a stat I like to reference -the 65+ age demographic is the most heterogeneous group that there is.)
I think/hope that line about “your average 94 year old” was meant as a joke, but it’s tough to tell. There were only half a dozen people at the matinee and I was the only one who laughed out loud.
